Jane Bown: Master of Black and White Portraits | Award-Winning Photographer & CBE Honoree
Jane Bown, London 1925-2014. Jane began her photographic career 56 years ago when her portrait of Bertrand Russell appeared in The Observer. She has been admired for her simple, natural black and white portrait, taken in natural light. Her published books include p. a the Gentle Eye, accompanied by a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.
Jane was awarded in 1995 the title of CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for her outstanding contribution to the development of photography.
